General E-ZPass FAQs

What is E-ZPass and how does it work?

E-ZPass is an electronic toll collection system, which takes cash, coins and toll tickets out of the toll collection process. Instead, drivers establish an account, prepay tolls and attach a small electronic device to their vehicles. Tolls are automatically deducted from the prepaid account as an E-ZPass customer passes through the toll lane. For additional information, see How It Works.

How does All Electronic Tolling (AET) work?

E-ZPass customers will experience the same seamless travel as they do now. All transactions are paid with an E-ZPass transponder or billed by mail. Motorists with/without an E-ZPass transponder will continue through the toll plaza without stopping as cash and credit cards payments are no longer accepted at the toll plaza.

How will I pay if I don’t have E-ZPass?

Motorists without an E-ZPass transponder, or those who utilize an invalid transponder, will have their license plate captured by overhead cameras for processing. An invoice is mailed to the registered owner or E-ZPass account holder. Payments for billed by mail transactions can be made online, through the mail, or by contacting our customer service center at 1-877-743-9727.

Isn't there someplace else I can mount my E-ZPass other than the windshield?

No. The transponder should be installed approximately one inch below the top of your windshield above your rearview mirror as stated in How It Works: it may not be "read" by the E-ZPass antenna. Placing the transponder on the sun visor, the rear view mirror, the dashboard, the seat, or in your hand may work sometimes, but will not work all of the time. Installing the transponder incorrectly or not at all may cause unnecessary toll evasion violations, administrative fees or delays at the tollbooth.
