What is E-ZPass and how does it work?

E-ZPass is an electronic toll collection system, which takes cash, coins and toll tickets out of the toll collection process. Instead, drivers establish an account, prepay tolls and attach a small electronic device to their vehicles. Tolls are automatically deducted from the prepaid account as an E-ZPass customer passes through the toll lane. For additional information, see How It Works.

Isn't there someplace else I can mount my E-ZPass other than the windshield?

No. The transponder should be installed approximately one inch below the top of your windshield above your rearview mirror as stated in How It Works: it may not be "read" by the E-ZPass antenna. Placing the transponder on the sun visor, the rear view mirror, the dashboard, the seat, or in your hand may work sometimes, but will not work all of the time. Installing the transponder incorrectly or not at all may cause unnecessary toll evasion violations, administrative fees or delays at the tollbooth.

What does the “Low Bal$” message that I see in the toll lane mean?

This means your account is now at or below the 50% minimum amount that you must maintain in your account and it is now time to mail in your replenishment to:

RITBA E-ZPass Customer Service Center
PO Box 52018
Newark, NJ 07101-8218

Or

Pay at one of our Walk-in Centers.

Failure to replenish your account will cause you to receive violations once your account goes into the negative. This message is usually displayed for customers with accounts backed by cash, but credit card customers’ with expired or canceled credit cards can get the same message. Contact the Customer Service Center at 1-877-743-9727 or visit a Walk-in-Center to resolve your issue.
